The transgressive mud coastal area of Bight of Benin is a muddy coastal complex which lies east of the Barrier/lagoon coast and stretches to the Benin River in the northwestern flank of the Niger Delta Nigeria. It constitute fragile buffer zone between the tranquil waters of the swamps and the menacing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Extensive breaching of this narrow coastal plain results in massive incursion of the sea into the inland swamps with serious implications for national security and economy. The area is under the influence of strong longshore currents and the nearshore littoral Guinea current is very weak. The ecosystem is very unique being the only transgressive mud coastal area of the Gulf of Guinea. The chapter describe the geomorphology, tidal hydrology, relief and drainage, topography, climate and meteorology, vegetation, economic characteristics, anthropogenic activities and its impacts on the ecosystem.
