Co-culture of primary or mesenchymal stem cells with macrophages M2, produce a very special conditioned medium with a recognizable and stable cytokine pattern, regardless of the donor, with unique anti-inflammatory properties, this product being capable of regulating certain inflammation pathways in an anti-inflammatory way, including the TLR3, TLR4, inflammasome and the purinergic system. By varying the cell type to be co-cultivated with the M2 macrophages, a certain selectivity is achieved on the tissue or cell group where the main action is to be exercised. This study shows the mechanism of action of one of these products, as well as its biosafety and efficacy in a preclinical trial to treat the cytokine storm associated with serious infectious processes, including COVID-19.
