Recently, eutrophication by anthropogenic influx of nutrient salts later causes organic pollution by phytoplankton remains. Orthophosphate, i.e. inorganic phosphate ion (Pi) is the most causative nutrient of the eutrophication and also essential nutrient for living organisms. On the other hand, organic matters cause organic pollution and can be estimated as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). To measure Pi or BOD is important to estimate the environmental water, although the water quality are improving year by year. The conventional standard method for Pi or BOD has several problems in the practical estimation performances. By these reasons, biosensors have been studied. We have developed enzymatic Pi biosensors for analyte specific measurements and microbial BOD biosensors for analyte non-specific measurements, respectively. For practical use, we tried to enhance sensitivity, stability, and reproducibility of the biosensors. As the results, we developed practical biosensors for Pi or BOD, although these biosensors was not manufactured and sold. In this chapter, I introduce the historical studies of the biosensors, and introduce the studies that I was involved in. Then, after considering the position of our studies in each field, I introduce the representative studies after that. Finally, I provide insight into the future perspectives of the two fields.
