Periodontitis is a noncommunicable infectious disease associated with an important inflammatory local and systemic burden. There is growing scientific evidence indicating periodontitis as a risk factor for the development of other systemic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), adverse pregnancy outcomes and other. Different studies have found a positive association between periodontitis and CVD. CVD is currently the leading cause of impairments quality of life alterations and death worldwide. There are two potential biological mechanism (bacteriemia and systemic dissemination of periodontal inflammatory markers) which have been suggested to link periodontitis and atherosclerosis-induced CVD. Moreover, periodontitis seems to increase the risk for hypertension and acute cardiovascular events. Beyond several potential mechanisms that link periodontitis to adverse pregnancy outcomes, in pregnant women it may also worsen the chronic vascular changes in relation with preexisting hypertension, which might put maternal and fetal health at risk. In this regard, periodontitis screening and treatment is considered an important preventative measure for the development and management of CVD as well as other diseases and conditions. Periodontal treatment strategy as well any adjustments in the CVD patients’ pharmacological treatment should be previously discussed and agreed on by cardiologist and periodontologist.
