Seed is an important component of agriculture, contributing significantly to the booming production of food and feed crops across the different agro-ecological regions of the world with constant challenges with reference to production, storage, and quality control. Rapid seed germination and stand establishment are critical factor to crop production under abiotic stress of various field and horticultural crops. Seed priming is a seed treatment process imbibing seed with restricted amount of water to allow sufficient hydration and advancement of metabolic processes but preventing germination. Seed priming is inuenced by many factors such as aeration, light, temperature, time, and seed quality and induced a set of biochemical changes in the seed which are required for initiating the germination process. The changes include activation of enzymes, breaking dormancy, metabolism of germination inhibitors, and imbibition. The positive effects of priming on the germination performance of many species are attributed to the induction of biochemical mechanisms of cell repair: the resumption of metabolic activity can restore cellular integrity, through the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins and the improvement of the antioxidant defense system metabolic damage incurred by dry seed and thus fortifying the metabolic machinery of the seed. The present deals about seed priming, physiological and biochemical changes in seed priming, different methods of seed priming and its role in sustainable agriculture.
