Iron is an essential element for many metabolic reactions in the human body. However, metabolic processes that cause iron overload or accumulation in the organism can cause tissue damage and even cell death. Ferroptosis is a regulated form of cell death that has been identified in recent years. Similar and distinct properties of ferroptosis to other forms of regulated cell death such as apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis have been demonstrated. In general, the increased intracellular iron load in ferroptosis raises reactive oxidative space (ROS) above levels the cell can handle. Associated with ferroptosis, oxidative stress is usually increased by glutathione (GSH) inactivation, followed by lipid peroxidation and membrane damage. Ferroptosis, one of the regulated cell death pathways, is associated with many pathological conditions such as tumors, kidney damage, nervous system diseases, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and hematological diseases. Many new links need to be explored with tumor suppressor genes related to cancer therapy and ferroptosis.
