Solar energy has become increasingly important in the alternative energy landscape. But in many desert regions industrial scale solar development is challenged by local communities. This research project, funded by USC’s Undergraduate Research Associates Program, involved two students taking a multidisciplinary dive into the complexities of solar siting and local attitudes in the Mojave Desert. The students did significant multidisciplinary work, including site suitability analysis, survey research, interviews, and field studies. One student completed the project highly skeptical of industrial scale solar development. The second student concluded that opposition to industrial solar development might be attributed to a villanization of corporate interests and a perceived lack of respect for the desert’s natural resources and communities, rather than an opposition to renewable energy. Ultimately, the students came away with a an experience that allowed them to develop their own perspectives and pursue independent research, which could serve as a model for other institutions.
