During the privatization in the Neue Bundeslander the instrument of management-buy-outs was among others employed. As an analysis of the dominant motives for management-buy-outs showed, the East German management buy outs are motivated mainly by security aspects. In established West European market economies usually the most important motives for management-buy-outs are of an entrepreneurial character. The results of a factor analysis composed of all motives lead to four motive sets. In assessing the effects of the motives for the management-buy-outs, it could be shown that the performance of those management-buy-outs motivated primarily by individual employment security motives developed rather poorly in comparison.
