The Internet of Things (IoT) is an ecosystem that combines wireless sensor networks, cloud computing, analytical data, interactive technologies as well as smart devices. Promoting security over this dynamic and heterogeneous environment with predefined and static mechanisms can result in improper decisions, resulting in the need for adaptive security solutions. With this in mind, the objectives of this paper are to: (i) systematize and present the concepts of adaptive security for IoT, including their relationship with studies in context awareness; (ii) perform a systematic literature review seeking to identify the state of the art; and (iii) develop a critical analysis of the identified work, in an effort to list research opportunities.
