O presente artigo apresenta um relato sobre a breve estada do pintor frances Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, membro da Missao Artistica Francesa, que desembarcou no Rio de Janeiro de 1816, e cujo intuito era o de trazer e fazer cultivar, no Rio de Janeiro, a refinada arte europeia, assim como era o de embelezar e urbanizar a cidade. Neste trabalho, sao descritas as circunstâncias de sua chegada, o seu papel como pintor da Coroa, o seu trabalho no Brasil, as dificuldades e os acertos do pintor frances, que retratou a Baia do Rio de Janeiro (atual Guanabara).  Aqui, buscamos levantar a questao da adaptacao do olhar estrangeiro diante de uma realidade dos tropicos. O texto procura apontar tal contradicao entre o ideal e o real, que aparece em sua pintura no Brasil. Abstract The current article presents a comment about the short permanence of the French painter Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, member of the French Artistic Mission arrived in Rio de Janeiro, in 1816. The scope of the Mission was to bring and cultivate the refined European Art in Rio de Janeiro as well as to urbanize the town. Different aspects of the permanence of Taunay are described, as the circumstances of his arrival, his role as the painter of the Portuguese Monarchy, under the reality of the tropics, the difficulties and adaptations of the artist who painted the Baia de Rio de Janeiro (current Guanabara). This text searches to point such contradictions between ideality and reality in his art in Brazil. Key words : Ideal, reality, adaptation, nature, universal, particular, neoclassicism. Resume [1] Cet article presente une description sur le court sejour du peintre francais Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, membre la Mission Artistique Francaise qui a debarque a Rio de Janeiro en 1816. Le but de la Mission etait celui d’apporter et faire developper l’art europeen raffine a Rio ainsi que de contribuer a l’urbanisation de la ville.  Nous decrivons des aspects differents de la permanence de Taunay au Bresil, les circonstances de son arrivee, son role comme peintre de la Monarchie Portugaise, sous la realite des tropiques, les difficultes et l’adaptation vecues par celui qui a peint la baia de Rio de Janeiro (nommee actuellement Baia de Guanabara). Ce texte essaye de pointer des contradictions entre l’idealite et la realite montrees dans son art lorsqu’il peignait le Bresil.
