Este artigo, abordando fontes dos Seculos XVIII, XIX e XX, faz uma breve incursao ao estudo da leitura que vigorou em Portugal do Islao magrebino. Relatos de cativeiro em Banhos magrebinos versus producoes ideologicas dadas a estampa em Portugal, justificativas da incompreensao de um outro civilizacional que se continuava a desvalorizar, mesmo quando ele era fundamental a saude estrategica do Estado, sao elementos de uma ampla realidade bem diferente daquela transmitida a opiniao publica portuguesa. Ao mito vigente, opunha-se a imagem de um Islao abrangente e inclusivo, mais propenso a tolerância que alguns dos seus emulos da margem norte do Mediterrâneo. Abstract This article, based on documentation from eighteenth to twentieth centuries, makes a brief incursion to the image of Maghreb’s Islam known in Portugal. Captivity narratives of Portuguese citizens in Algiers Regence versus ideological productions printed in Portugal justified the misunderstanding of a reality that was still devaluated although it was important to the strategic health of the Portuguese State. To contemporary status quo of a barbaric Maghreb, it was opposed the image of an inclusive Islam more tolerant than other political realities in the north edge of the Mediterranean Sea.
