The present study explored the brain mechanism for object substitution masking (OSM), in which a weak spatiotemporal representation can be masked by a trailing weak stimulus at object-level, using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). OSM has been thought to occur due to information updating process in an object-level representation when the leading target and the trailing mask are perceived as the same object. We targeted the area V5/MT+ on the assumption that the motion signal from the target to the mask should subserve objectcontinuity. OSM was reduced after rTMS over V5/MT+, while such reduction was not observed after sham stimulation. These results suggest normal functioning of V5/MT+ is involved in OSM. We concluded that attenuated OSM can be attributed to the disruption of object continuity following rTMS of V5/MT+.
