The neural activations of a low AD/HD symptomatic group and a high AD/HD symptomatic group were compared in different cognitive contexts by manipulating the number of Go trials preceding a No-go trial. The high AD/HD symptomatic group showed lower activation in the caudate nucleus regardless of the cognitive context. Lower activation of the prefrontal areas in the high AD/HD symptomatic group was observed only when the consecutive number of Go trials was small. Lower activation of the anterior cingulate cortex and a higher activation of the pre-supplementary motor areas in the high AD/HD symptomatic group were observed only when the consecutive numbers of Go trials was large. These findings suggest that there are some differences in the cognitive processing of behavioral inhibition that are associated with the degree of AD/HD symptoms, and that each difference are emphasized by different cognitive contexts.
