Sodium hydrogen telluride in ethanol was found to regioselectively reduce the α, β-carbon-carbon double bond conjugated with the carbonyl group of various essential oil compounds. In particular, (-) -carvone was converted with high stereoselectivity to (+) -dihydrocarvone. This reaction was found applicable to the corresponding unsaturated ketones, lactones and even aldehydes.
