Although the family Hydrophyllaceae is largely herbaceous, woody species and genera present a series of interesting problems which invite study by means of wood anatomy. One concern of this paper and its antecedent (Cariquist, Eckhart and Michener 1983) is whether Hydrophyllaceae is ba sically an herbaceous or woody family. The potential parallel between the distinctive habits of particular genera and species and their wood anatomy provides other questions. For example, is raylessness in some Hydrophyl laceae the result of secondary woodiness, as appears to be the case in other families? Does the wood of Wigandia, the most arborescent genus in the family, approach an herbaceous or a woody mode of wood structure more closely?
