本研究は, 明治中期における相模川流域の植生景観を, 主に横浜水道工事関係写真から検討したものである。そのために, 詳しい地形図をもとにして作成した地形モデル上に指標となる3種類の樹木モデルを適宜配置したシミュレーションモデルを作成し, それと写真とを比較することにより, 写真に写された植生の高さなどを詳しく検討した。その結果, 横浜水道の水源に近い相模川流域の山地には, 当時, 高さが1mにも満たない植生地や34m程度までの高さの低木林が広く見られ, 高木の樹木がまとまって見られるところは少なかったこと, 一方, 官林や山の稜線付近などの一部には, 10mを超える高さの樹木や森林も見られたことなどが明らかになった。
