江戸後期, 瀬戸内海を記述した紀行文に, 従来の歌枕や名所旧跡に捕らわれない風景の素直な評価と, 風景を遠く見渡し広く捉える広闊な俯瞰景の賞賛が現れ始める。それまで歌枕や名所旧跡しか讃えなかった日本人に, 徐々に歌枕や名所旧跡からの離脱が始まり, 瀬戸内海の新しい風景が少しずつ見えてきたといえる。その動きは, まだ従来の風景観の枠組みに強く支配された中での変化であり, 明治の近代的風景観の台頭ほど鮮明ではないが, 歌枕名所的風景ともいうべき伝統的風景の捉え方とは異なる新しい風景視点の萌芽であった。中世, 近世の瀬戸内海の紀行文を分析することによって, 江戸後期のこの新しい風景視点の萌芽を明らかにするものである。
