The number of pure tone audiometric (PTA) tests performed on 334 neurotological patients was investigated in relation to type of disorder, degree of hearing loss and whether hearing loss was unilateral or bilateral.1) The frequency of PTA testing performed on the 334 patients in the survey ranged from 0.01 to 2.79 times per month.2) Sudden deafness, bilateral Meniere's disease, and luetic hydrops necessitated particularity frequent PTA testing. In cases of dizziness and tinnitus without hearing loss, however, a small number of tests sufficed. Inpatients needed more frequent testing than outpatients.3) The necessity for PTA testing increased greatly when the hearing loss was more than 30dB.4) No significant difference was found between patients with unilateral and bilateral hearing loss except that. Bilateral Meniere's disease required more frequent testing than unilateral.
