Eighty ears of patients with occluded Eustachian tubes and 39 ears of those with otitis media with effusion (OME) were treated by injection of steroid solution into the pharyngeal orifices of the Eustachian tube.Eustachian tube function was examined by several methods: 1) inspection of ear drums, 2) audiometry, 3) tympanometry, 4) tubo-tympanoaerodynometry, 5) endoscopy of the epipharynx.Edematous swelling of the pharyngeal orifice of the Eustachian tube was observed in all cases and this condition was considered to be the chief cause of tubal disturbance. In all cases, injection of steroid solution was performed through the nasal cavity under direct observation of the tubal orifice with a nasopharyngoscope under local anesthesia in the sitting position.Sixty-five ears (81.3%) with occluded tubes and 26 ears (66.7%) with OME responded well to this injection method.Therefore, this seems to be a reliable treatment for these diseases.In a five year follow up study no severe side effects were noted.
