Four cases of acute sensori-neural hearing loss after exposure to loud sounds in rock concerts were studied, and about 130 people who attended a rock concert in our school were questioned about cochlear symptoms.A. The 4 cases1. In the 4 cases there was unilateral sensori-neural hearing loss. In one case there was severe, flat type hearing impairment with poor prognosis, while in the other 3 cases mild, dip type hearing impairment later improved.2. The impaired ear was always on the side closer to the speaker and in 3 of the 4 cases, there was physical as well as mental fatigue.B. The people who attended the rock concert.3. About one third of the people who attended the concert complained of cochlear symptoms. Most of their complaints disappeared within half an hour, but in one case, they persisted for more than 24 hours.4. Computer analysis showed that those who complained of cochlear symptoms were located nearer to the speakers than those who did not complain. Moreover, more of the former also complained of mental fatigue than the latter.From the above data, it was concluded that proximity to the speakers as well as mental fatigue were primary factors in causing the onset of hearing impairment.
