In this article, I examine how the actors involved in the publications of five translations of French philosophers to Norwegian in the series Pax Artes, as well as the reviewers of these publications, have worked to promote French philosophy among general readers interested in the humanities in Norway – both through praise and criticism. The theoretical framework consists of an understanding of these actors’ interplay as a form of “multiple dissemination”, as well as the use of Genette’s notion “paratext” and Bourdieu’s notion “symbolic capital”: I examine how the series, the translations and the actors involved in the publications are attributed symbolic capital – or criticized – in the paratext. Through a combination of thorough academic workmanship, a thought-through use of graphic design and layout, and serious criticism, the actors involved in the publications seek to disseminate central, but complex philosophical conceptions to a broader, not exclusively academic, public. 2020 © Sakprosa Bind 12, Nr. 2 G.
