Este artículo trata sobre la importancia del trabajo de Paul F. Lazarsfeld durante los cincuenta años de su vida como escritor, investigador y docente en el campo de la sociología. Se habla en primer lugar de las influencias intelectuales en su adolescencia y de su carrera como ayudante de los psicólogos Karl y Charlotte Bühler en la Universidad de Viena (1927). Sus actividades llamaron la atención de la Fundación Rockefeller, que le concedió una beca para ir a Estados Unidos en 1933, donde comenzó su trabajo institucional, primero en la Universidad de Newark y después en el Bureau of Applied Social Research en la Universidad de Columbia. A Lazarsfeld se le identifica como pionero en el campo del análisis cuantitativo. Sus trabajos se vinculan a la creciente importancia de la investigación empírica, de la que podemos distinguir dos características principales: a) un aspecto metodológico, donde los problemas generales de la investigación son tratados con técnicas específicas de análisis, como el de las estructuras latentes; b) otro aspecto, el de la investigación, que se centra en los problemas sobre la toma de decisiones. Su principal foco de interés fue el «análisis empírico de la acción» -el estudio de la acción individual- y las encuestas por muestreo que se convirtieron en su instrumento de trabajo más importante. La segunda parte del artículo describe el panorama crítico de los aspectos más filosóficos y metodológicos de su obra. En primer lugar, a finales de los años treinta su desencuentro con Adorno en el Princeton Radio Research Project, cuando Lazarsfeld le contrató para supervisar un estudio sobre la cultura musical a través de la radio. El problema que surgió entre ambos fue cómo medir socialmente la cultura. Aquí se enfrentaron dos puntos de vista diferentes: Adorno entendía la palabra método más en el sentido epistemológico europeo que en el sentido técnico americano. Este enfoque crítico enfrentó a Adorno con todo el equipo de investigación y tuvo que dimitir. Pero su crítica no era una crítica sólo teórica sino metodológica, referida a la sociedad y a la forma de hacer sociología en la universidad americana. Por otra parte, la crítica desde el interaccionismo de H. Blumer, la reacción radical de C.W. Mills contra el empirismo abstracto y la controversia marxista entre M. Pollak y J. Dumazedier señalan la importancia del papel intelectual que tuvo Lazarsfeld después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y su influencia tanto sobre la sociología europea, especialmente en Francia, como sobre muchas de las instituciones internacionales relacionadas con la investigación social. Finalmente, se trata de perfilar un balance de sus circunstancias históricas y su trabajo, con una referencia especial a la relación entre el enfoque teórico y empírico en la ciencia social.This paper states the importance of Lazarsfeld's work during his half-century of teaching, research and writing. First I write on the intellectual influences to which he was exposed from his late adolescence and outline his career as assistant to the psychologists Karl and Charlotte Bühler in the University (1927). These activities attract the Rockefeller Foundation attention, which invited him to come to the United States as a «Rockefeller Fellow» of statistical- mathematical background with interest in social psychology (1932). I write too on his institutional work from the University of Newark to the Columbia's support of the Bureau of Applied Social Research. Lazarsfeld is most often identified as a pioneer in the field of quantitative analysis. His contributions are connected to this growing importance of empirical research at the institutional level from which we distinguish two mean trends: a) a methodological one where general problems, like setting up research, are treated with specific techniques of analysis as the latent structural ones; b) a research trend centred on problems like how we come to a decision. This first interest was in what he called «the empirical analysis of action» -the study of individual action- and sample surveys became the principal tool. The second part of this paper provides a critical overview of the more philosophical and methodological aspects of his work. First of all in the late 1930's, when Lazarsfeld was director of the Rockefeller Funded Princeton Radio Research Project and he employed Th. W. Adorno to supervise a study on music within American culture. The cornerstone of the problem between Lazarsfeld and Adorno was the measurement of culture. Two points of view were confronted: Adorno understood the word method more in its European sense of epistemology than in its American sense of research technique. This approach pushed Adorno in the direction of being regarded as a social commentator and not a social scientist, and he was definitely dismissed. But his critique of music was not simply a musical one but a critique of the society within which such music was produced. The interactionisme of H. Blumer, the radical reaction of C.W. Mills against the abstract empirism and the marxist controversy between M. Pollack and J. Dumazedier signals the importance and the rol played by Lazarsfeld after the Second World War, and his influence on the european sociology, specially in France, and on other international institutions of social research. Finally, I try to point out a balance of his work and circumstances, with special reference to the link between theoretical and empirical approach in social science
