Scholarly focus on altarpieces and frontals from medieval Castile has long struggled to advance due to the fact that few examples of these altar furnishings survive from this Iberian kingdom. Th is study will lay out the fi rst steps for remedying this imbalance by providing an overview of the surviving corpus of altarpieces and frontals from medieval Castile and by drawing particular attention to a newly discovered set of panels now held in a private collection. Th ese panels once comprised a closable polypytch and display images from the life of the Virgin. It is in reference to a solitary image of Saint Catherine that the work is here known as the Panels or Polypych of Saint Catherine. Th e format and iconographic programme of the panels share many striking similarities with other surviving panels. And yet, subtle diff erences between the representations of fi gures, modelling of robes and compositions of scenes suggest that it was made by one of many artists working in the region. As part of this group, the Saint Catherine Polyptych introduces important material evidence that helps us to better understand the production of altarpieces and frontals in fourteenth-century Castile. Th e panels also help to further establish the importance of Castile in current discussions over the development and function of altarpieces across medieval Europe.
