Este artículo propone que la buena narrativa de ficción (literatura) contribuye a una comprehensión de ciertas situaciones existenciales que no pueden ser alcanzadas por los géneros escritos considerados objetivos, como el ensayo, la historia o el periodismo. Sucintamente, será estudiado el caso del escritor ruso Varlam Shalámov, que pasó diecinueve años como prisionero en un campo de trabajos forzados en Kolymá, esencia de su trabajo principal, Historias de Kolymá. Sus historias transmiten ese tipo de experiencia sobre la destrucción de vidas humanas con una profundidad, riqueza y detalle completamente necesarios para la comprensión, e imposible en otro tipo de investigación. Esto no sólo convierte a Shalámov en un gran escritor, sino también a toda su obra en un ejemplo fundamental de lo que llamamos «propiedades cognitivas de lo narrativo».The article proposes that the good fiction narrative (literature) contributes with a comprehension of certain existential situations which those writing genres considered objective cannot meet, such as essays, history or journalism. Succinctly, the case of the Russian writer Vaslam Shalámov is being studied, who spent 19 years held prisoner in the forced labour camps of Kolyma, essence of his main work, Stories of Kolyma. His stories transmit that kind of experience on the destruction of human lives with a deepness, richness and detail completely necessary for the comprehension, and impossible in any other kind of investigation. That turns Shalamov not only into a great writer but his whole work into a fundamental example of what we say «cognitive properties of the narrative»
