La prima sezione dell’articolo dimostra come in gran parte del XIX secolo la modalità del fantastico prevalente sulle scene europee sia di tipo spettacolare e mirata alla produzione di reazioni immediate di meraviglia o paura da parte del pubblico. In questo caso lo spazio teatrale funziona come una boîte à merveilles, un contenitore di eventi soprannaturali messi in bella vista. Solo verso la fine del secolo, nei drammi di alcuni grandi autori emerge una più raffinata concezione del fantastico, in cui il soprannaturale, oltre ad assumere un forte valore simbolico, irrompe nel «mondo reale» in modo meno evidente ma più efficace e inqiuetante. Lo spazio domestico quotidiano può così diventare ambientazione privilegiata di situazioni o eventi perturbanti o spaventosi. In questo la drammaturgia moderna si riallaccia, più che alla spettacolarità dominante tra teatro barocco e romantico, ad alcune grandi tragedie greche in cui la casa è presentata come il luogo in cui si origina e si annida l’orrore soprannaturale: nella sua seconda parte l’articolo si sofferma a mo’ d’esempio sull’Agamennone di Eschilo. La terza e la quarta parte dell’articolo si focalizzano sulla trasformazione della tipica ambientazione del dramma borghese, che è appunto l’interno domestico, in uno spazio perturbante che la morte assedia dall’esterno o abita come un segreto parassita. Tale ipotesi è verificata attraverso una dettagliata analisi dello spazio drammatico ne L’intrusa di Maurice Maeterlinck e nella Sonata di fantasmi di August Strindberg. Nel primo dramma uno spazio domestico è reso unheimlich dall’atmosfera di allarmata attesa in cui i personaggi sono coinvolti; una serie di piccoli segnali visivi e soprattutto auditivi consegnano gradualmente questo spazio a una dimensione fantastica particolarmente cupa. Nella pièce di Strindberg una casa «normale» acquisisce via via caratteristiche sinistre, fino a rivelarsi, senza alcun ricorso a convenzionali apparizioni del soprannaturale, un rifugio di morti viventi e un luogo dove tutto è fiaccato da una sorta di possessione vampiresca.The first section of the article demonstrates how through a great part of the XIXth century the prevailing attitude of fantastic on European stages is a spectacular one, aiming at direct effects of marvel or fear on its audience. In this case the dramatic and scenic space works like a boîte à merveilles, a container of well visible supernatural events. Only towards the end of the century, in the plays of some great authors a more refined attitude of fantastic emerges, where the supernatural, besides assuming a strong symbolic value, creeps into the «real world» in a less evident, but more effective and disquieting way. Thus, the second part of the article focuses on the transformation of the emblematic set of the bourgeois drama, the domestic interior, into an uncanny space, which Death besieges from outside or occupies as a secret parasite. This hypothesis is verified through a detailed analysis of dramatic space in The Intruder by Maurice Maeterlinck and in The Ghost Sonata by August Strindberg. In the first play a domestic space is made unheimlich by the atmosphere of alarmed wait by which the characters get involved; here, like in other Maeterlinck’s plays, the sounds become a fundamental element of the transformation of space and of its assumption of a fantastic dimension. In Strindberg’s drama a «normal» house acquires sinister characteristics, till it reveals itself, without any resort to conventionally supernatural images, a refuge of living dead and a place where everything is weakened by a sort of vampire haunting
