O estudo tem como objetivo analisar a dimensão simbólica da violência de gênero, visando contribuir para a elaboração de princípios para se lidar com a problemática. Trata-se de uma discussão introdutória para que ações de enfrentamento da violência de gênero sejam promovidas. A partir dessa perspectiva, inicialmente são apresentados subsídios para que as categorias gênero e masculinidade sirvam de base para se compreender a dimensão simbólica da violência no contexto das relações gênero. Em seguida, focaliza-se a violência simbólica no sentido de dar uma visibilidade maior para instâncias da violência de gênero que não são reconhecidas como tal. Por último, apresento princípios para que a discussão sobre o assunto tenha continuidade.The aim of this article is to support a positive campaign against gender violence, or violence against women, by offering an introductory account of its symbolism. First, I set out the case for taking gender and masculinity to be the keys to understanding the symbolism of violence in the context of gender relations. I then use that analysis to bring into focus those cases of violence which are otherwise hidden or unrecognised. Lastly, I offer suggestions as to how the debate may be continued
