The research aimed to explore the salience of differentmotives for substance use among alcohol, tobacco andmarijuana users, and to investigate the difference in motives\u27salience with regard to frequency of substance use andrespondents\u27 socio-demographic characteristics. Data werecollected among subsamples of alcohol, tobacco andmarijuana users drawn from the representative sample ofCroatian citizens (N = 4756). Respondents assessed fourtypes, and for marijuana use five types of motives for eachsubstance use (enhancement, social, conformity, coping, andexpansion). The enhancement motives were assessed as themost, and conformity motives as the least salient motivesamong all groups of substance users. Generally, enhancedsalience of motives was related to the frequency of all typesof substance use. While age had significant effect on thesalience of social motives for tobacco use, gender andmarital status had significant effect on the salience of allmotives for alcohol use, and age had significant effect onlyon the salience of enhancement and social motives foralcohol use. Among marijuana users, only marital status hadsignificant effect on the salience of expansion motives formarijuana use. Results are discussed within the framework ofmotivational models for substance use.Cilj istraživanja bio je ispitati istaknutost različitih motiva zauporabu sredstava ovisnosti među konzumentima alkohola,duhana i marihuane te ispitati razlike u istaknutosti različitihmotiva s obzirom na učestalost konzumiranja navedenihsredstava ovisnosti i socio-demografskih karakteristikasudionika. Podaci su prikupljeni na poduzorcima konzumenataalkohola, duhana i marihuane iz reprezentativnoguzorka građana Hrvatske (N = 4756). Sudionici su procjenjivaličetiri motiva za uporabu alkohola i duhana (motivpodizanja raspoloženja, socijalni motiv, motiv konformiranjai motiv suočavanja), a za uporabu marihuane i peti motiv(motiv proširenja svijesti). Motivi podizanja raspoloženjaprocijenjeni su kao najzastupljeniji, a motivi konformiranjakao najmanje zastupljeni među svim skupinama konzumenatasredstava ovisnosti. Općenito, povećana istaknutostmotiva povezana je s učestalosti uporabe svih sredstavaovisnosti. Dob je imala značajan učinak na istaknutostsocijalnih motiva za pušenje duhana, spol i bračni status naistaknutost svih motiva za konzumaciju alkohola, dok je dobimala značajan učinak samo na istaknutost motiva podizanjaraspoloženja i socijalne motive za konzumaciju alkohola.Među konzumentima marihuane samo je bračni status imaoznačajan učinak na istaknutost motiva proširenja svijesti zauporabu marihuane. Rezultati su analizirani u okvirumotivacijskih modela za uporabu sredstava ovisnosti
