The aim of the study was to assess the relationship betweenbeliefs about costs and benefits of forgiveness, motivation toforgive and well-being. Motivation to forgive was measured byTRIM Inventory consisting of three scales – avoidance, revengeand benevolence motivation. Well-being was measured by Lifesatisfaction scale and PANAS. The scales for measuring beliefsabout costs and benefits of forgiveness (CBFS) were speciallydeveloped for this study. Two factors of beliefs about benefits offorgiveness (benefits for oneself and benefits for theother/relationship) and two factors of beliefs about costs offorgiveness (failure to protect oneself and failure to educate theoffender) were revealed. Results of multiple regression revealedtwo significant predictors of life satisfaction, belief in benefits ofthe forgiveness for the other/relationship as positive predictorand failure to protect oneself as cost of forgiveness as negativepredictor. Failure to protect oneself and revenge motivationwere positive predictors, and belief in benefits of theforgiveness for the other/relationship was negative predictor ofnegative affect. There were no significant predictors of positiveaffect. Results suggest that believing in benefits of forgivenessrather than in costs can improve our well-being by increasinglife satisfaction and lowering negative affect.Cilj istraživanja bio je ispitati odnos između vjerovanja okoristi i šteti od opraštanja, motivacije za opraštanje idobrobiti. Motivacija za opraštanje mjerena je TRIMinventarom, koji se sastoji od tri skale – izbjegavanje, osvetai dobronamjernost. Dobrobit je mjerena Skalom životnogazadovoljstva i PANAS upitnikom pozitivnih i negativnihafekata. Skale za mjerenje vjerovanja o šteti i koristi odopraštanja konstruirane su za potrebe ovog istraživanja.Faktorska analiza rezultirala je dvama faktorima vjerovanjao koristi od opraštanja (korist za sebe i korist za druguosobu/odnos) i dvama faktorima vjerovanja o šteti odopraštanja (neuspjeh da se zaštitimo i neuspjeh daeduciramo osobu koja nas je povrijedila). Provedene suvišestruke regresijske analize sa životnim zadovoljstvom,pozitivnim i negativnim afektima kao kriterijskim varijablamate vjerovanjima o šteti i koristi od opraštanja i motivacijomza opraštanje kao prediktorskim varijablama. Značajnimprediktorima životnoga zadovoljstva pokazali su sevjerovanje u korist za drugu osobu/odnos kao pozitivanprediktor i neuspjeh da se zaštitimo kao negativan prediktor.Neuspjeh da se zaštitimo i motivacija za osvetom bili supozitivni prediktori, dok je korist za odnos bila negativanprediktor negativnih afekata. Nije bilo značajnih prediktorapozitivnih afekata. Rezultati pokazuju da vjerovanja u koristiopraštanja više nego u štetu mogu unaprijediti našudobrobit povećavajući životno zadovoljstvo i smanjujućinegativne afekte
