1. In 2004 codificeerde België zijn internationaal privaatrecht. Anders dan in Nederland gebeurde dit in een afzonderlijk wetboek, het Wetboek van Internationaal Privaatrecht (hierna: Wetboek IPR). Dit Wetboek IPR omvat de drie luiken van het internationaal privaatrecht: (1) bepalingen die de internationaal bevoegde rechter of ambtenaar aanwijzen, (2) verwijzingsregels die het toepasselijk recht op internationale rechtsverhoudingen aanduiden (het conflictenrecht) en (3) bepalingen inzake de erkenning en tenuitvoerlegging in België van buitenlandse authentieke akten en rechterlijke beslissingen. Dit is ook anders dan het Nederlandse Boek 10 BW dat hoofdzakelijk regels van conflictenrecht bevat.
