<p>This manuscript reviews the advance in understanding of the mechanisms of the interactions between oscillating structures and fluid flows. Many analytical, numerical and experimental approaches to model and to identify the non-stationary, nonlinear interactions between fluid flows and oscillating structures are summarized. The applications of fluid flow-oscillating structure interaction to propulsion and energy harvest are discussed. The issue of the establishment of generalized, parametric, reduced-order models is discussed with an aim at illustrating the perspectives for improving the correlation between test data and physics-based modeling.</p
