Knowledge of single-particle energies is critically important for a microscopic description of the atomic nucleus. In the absence of a model capable of accurate predictions across the whole nuclear chart, realistic calculations still require that effective single-particle energies be empirically determined. Transfer reactions are one of the best tools to determine the single-particle strength of the populated states, by comparing the experimental and theoretical cross sections of the scattered light ejectiles. Radioactive ion beams and new experimental set-ups are being used to study transfer reactions in inverse kinematics in increasingly exotic regions of the nuclear chart. In this context, studies of nuclei neighbouring single and double shell closures are particularly valuable, because they permit direct comparisons with the latest shell model calculations. This paper will focus, in particular, on measurements carried out near the N = 50 and N = 82 neutron shell closures, which cross respectively the neutron-rich doubly-magic exotic nuclei Ni and Sn.
