MKE Ankaragücü is a football club that was founded in Istanbul and but then moved to Ankara –a journey that dates back to the War of Independence. As a football club founded by the workers, students and masters of the War Materiel Manufacturer’s Group (İmalat-ı Harbiye), Ankaragücü succeeded in creating an effective representation in both the social and cultural life of Ankara after the 1920s. Backed by its fan masses, Ankaragücü has been celebrated for many years as the most attractive sports club in Ankara. This major support, which cannot be explained simply by the club’s limited sportive success, originates from its history, of being a workers’ team, and the club’s relationship with the city. Covering all the districts of the entire city, Ankaragücü has managed to attract a massive support from the ‘Old Ankara’ and the ‘New Other Ankara’ ever since it was founded. In addition to the club’s historical development and its relationship with the city, this study focuses on the views of Ankaragücü fans concerning the city, the club and their sense of belonging. Further to in-depth interviews, the article uses a focus group study conducted around the themes of Ankara and the club. The study also tries to explore the city of Ankara in the eyes of the fans while emphasizing the club’s role and its representation in Ankara.
