キチンやセルロース等の多糖は,自然界に多く存在する バイオマスであり,主に加水分解酵素によって分解され る。これらの分解産物には人類にとって有用な物が多く, 分解を効率良く行うことは持続可能な社会の実現のために 重要な課題である。植物を構成するセルロースからはバイ オエタノールの原料となるグルコースが得られる。カニ殻 やエビ殻などに含まれるキチンを分解して得られる N-ア セチルグルコサミン (NAG) は,健康食品や化粧品に添加 され,今日では広く市場に展開している。しかし,現在の 酵素分解法による製造効率は,決して高いとはいえない。 近年これらの強固な構造を持つ多糖に切れ目を入れる酵素 として Lytic polysaccharide mono-oxygenases (LPMO = 多糖 可溶化酸素添加酵素とでも訳せばいいだろうか?) が報告 された。LPMOの働きにより,多糖分解酵素の分解効率 が促進されることから,LPMOは自然界における不溶性 多糖の分解に大きな役割を果たしていると考えられる。 ここでは,著者の研究テーマであり,キチナーゼの分解 促進効果が注目されている LPMOについて紹介し,これ らの知見を勘案して「糖質資源の活用に向けた酵素分解系 の開発」について述べる。
