Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem., called Japanese angelica tree, is adeciduous shrub belonging to the Araliaceae, native to Russian FarEast, China, Korea, and Japan. The young shoots are eaten asvegetables for various dishes in Korea, especially in spring. As thedemand of this vegetable is increasing, cultivation of the tree isbecoming popular. Several diseases including Phytophthora blighthave been known on this plant (Lee et al., 2008). Root and rhizomerot and itsdam age have been noticed from several commercial fieldsof this crop since 1998 (Fig. 1A-C). The causal fungus of the diseasewas tentatively recorded as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum without data(Lee et al., 2008). To reveal the identity of the fungus, nine isolateswere obtained from rotting rhizomes in Gapyeong, Jinju andChuncheon. All isolates were typical of the genus Sclerotinia in theabsence of conidia formation and rich production of sclerotia onpotato dextrose agar plates (Fig. 1 DE Saito, 1997). It could be the mostimportant pathogen of Japanese angelica tree, especially in nurseryplots, in Korea, where the cuttings are densely planted andcontinuous cultivation is common.
