This work presents different aspects of human interventions on natural systems in urban areas of Santa Maria city. Urban use and interest in the land has historically included significant drainage modifications. The urbanization has affected major floods, erosion and sedimentation in stream channels of the Cadena basin. In Santa Maria the channelization was a practice used to control flooding and drain wetlands. However there weren’t buildings to control bank stream erosion. Channelization involves widening,deepening or straightening of a channel which may be associated with considerable bank erosion which locally enlarges the width of a channel and it affects urban areas causing hazards. Moreover, the erosion increment may work its way up the tributaries as a series of knick points in response to urban’s stream changes. The analyses of the antropic intervention on the tributaries of Cadena stream divided the basins into low, medium and high intervention levels.Este trabalho apresenta diferentes aspectos da intervenção humana no sistema natural da área urbana de Santa Maria. O uso urbano e o interesse pela terra provocaram, ao longo do tempo, significativas modificações na rede de drenagem. A urbanização tem afetado as planícies de inundação, erosão e sedimentação dos canais da bacia hidrográfica do arroio Cadena. Em Santa Maria a canalização foi uma prática usada para controlar inundações e drenar terras úmidas. Entretanto, não foram realizadas obras para controle da erosão das margens. Canalizações envolvendo o alargamento, aprofundamento ou a retificação do canal podemassociar-se ao considerável aumento da erosão das margens dos canais e ao aumento da largura do canal, afetando áreas urbanas, causando riscos à população. Além disso, o incremento da erosão pode afetar tributários a montante, como uma série de rupturas na vertente associadas a mudanças do nível base local em resposta às intervenções nas drenagens urbanas. A análise das intervenções antrópicas nas microbacias dos afluentes do arroio Cadena permitiram dividir as bacias em baixo, médio, alto e muito alto níveis de intervenção
