Cocoyam is an important crop located in tropic and sub-tropicbecause it provides food and incomes to peasant. Nicaraguais in the centre of origin of Xanthosoma genus where wildspecies with potential use can be found. Nevertheless, theinformation about the genetic relationship among and withingenera is scarce. The use of molecular markers generatedfrom 40 RAPD primers (B and D kits Operon technologies)in the characterization of Xanthosoma species grown inNicaragua was evaluated. With this purpose DNA fromfour cultivated and three wild Xanthosoma, four ornamentalAlocasia, and three cultivated Colocasia genotypes wasextracted. The generated molecular markers were submittedto phenetic analysis using the Neighbour joining program.Fourteen of all the primers revealed polymorphism betweenthe genotypes. Dendrogram generated grouped the cultivatedand wild Xanthosoma together excepting X. mexicanum.The Colocasia and Alocasia species did not form any cleargroup. This study confirms the genetic the variation in wildand cultivated Xanthosoma family grown in Nicaragua. Thepolymorphic molecular markers generated for the 14 RAPDprimers can be used for the molecular characterization of theXanthosoma germplasm collected in Nicaragua.Key words: Genetic diversity; RAPD markers; XanthosomaDOI: 10.5377/calera.v9i13.18
