86 学術の動向 2017.3 At the opening of the workshop, I conveyed greetings from Professor Nili Cohen, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, who wished us a successful workshop and the continued strengthening of scientific ties between the two academies. This is the second workshop held in collaboration with the Science Council of Japan and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. In October 2013, the Presidents of both academies (Professor Ruth Arnon from Israel and Professor Takashi Onishi from Japan) signed an MOU to promote scientific cooperation between the academies. The first collaborative workshop was held in Israel in March 2015, on "The Science of Water Management and Treatment", with the participation of experts from both countries. The present meeting, entitled "Novel Achievements in Coral-Reef Research in a Period of Global Climate Change" is the second workshop. The topic is indeed timely, as we have followed with much concern the recent devastating effects of coral bleaching and the concomitant mass coral mortality at the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, resulting from an increase in seawater temperature. This catastrophic event followed similarly distressing past events of mass coral bleaching in many other coral reefs around the world. Compounding on the adverse effects of global climate change on coral reef communities are the regional or local man-made perturbations, which constitute a major threat to the health of these important ecosystems.
