For the purpose to find out the issues on standardizing method of determining molecular weight cut-off characteristics of single hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membrane, retention of four polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different average molecular weight 3, 000, 7, 500, 20, 000 and 50, 000 was measured under the following conditions of transmembrane pressure (TMP) 10, 20, 30kPa and linear velocity (u) 0.02-0.32m/s, using UF membrane PM-10 supplied from Amicon. The dimensions of hollow fiber used are the followings; inner diameter is in the range of 0.8mm to 1.15mm, and effective length 30cm.The measured retention (Robs) increases with the increase of u and decreases with the increase of TMP. Mass transfer coefficient (kobs) of PEG on the surface of hollow fiber UF membrane is obtained from the relationship between Robs and u, and compared with the theoretically derived k by Leveque and that by boundary layer theory. The agreement between kobs and Leveque's k is good. Using Leveque's k, Robs is corrected by removing the concentration polarization effect to obtain intrinsic retention (R). The obtained R dose not depend on u but slightly depends on TMP. The reliability of R increases with the decrease of TMP.
