風にあおられて屋根から転落,倒木に挟まれた,折れ た枝が当たった,バイクで走行中に倒木に衝突,とい ったように,強風が直接または間接的な原因となって いる。なお,各地で最大瞬間風速の記録を更新し,広 範囲で強風被害をもたらした風台風であった 2004 年 台風 18 号 においては,船沈没座礁以外の原因で亡く なった死者 18 名のうち, 1 名が土砂崩れ, 4 名が高波, 13 名が強風が原因となっている 。 次に,2009 年台風 18 号により生じた,農林水産被 害(農林水産省の災害関連情報, 2009 年 11 月 5 日時 点 )を,2004 年台風 18 号 と同年 23 号の被害 と 比較する形で表2に示す。農作物やビニールハウス等 の損壊,破損による被害額は,記録的な強風をもたら した 2004 年台風 18 号と比べるとかなり小さい。一方 2004 年台風 23 号と比べると,これらの 2 つの項目の 被害額については,半分程度となっており,他の被害 よりもその差が小さい。これらの被害が,風の影響を 特に受けやすいものであることが原因となっている可 能性があるが,詳細はさらに検討する必要があろう。
