The aim of this study was to eva lu a te the epi de mi o lo gi cal, cli ni cal, and la bo ra tory fin dings and tre at ment pro to cols of adult pa ti ents with cu ta ne o us ant hrax ret ros pec ti vely. Ma te ri al and Met hods: A ret ros pec ti ve re vi ew of 39 adult pa ti ents with cu ta ne o us ant hrax pre sen ted bet we en 1983 and 2005, in Cum hu ri yet Uni ver sity Hos pi tal in Si vas, a city lo ca ted in the cen tral Ana to li a region of Tur key was car ri ed out. Re sults: Of the 39 ca ses with the di ag no sis of cu ta ne o us ant hrax, 27 (69.2%) we re ma les and 12 (30.8%) we re fe ma les. The me an age was 44 (ran ge, 1674) ye ars. The cli ni cal pre sen ta ti ons we re se ve re ede ma du e to ant hrax in 10 (26%) and typi cal pus tu ler le si on in 29 (74%) patients. The le si ons we re mostly lo ca ted on the hand and fo re arm. Twenty-fi ve ca ses (64.1%) had a his tory of re cent ani mal sla ugh te ring ac ti vity. Cul tu ring of 39 wo und spe ci mens yi el ded 17 (43.6%) B. ant hra cis stra ins. Thirty-six (92.3%) pa ti ents we re tre a ted with pe ni cil lin G. A pa ti ent with se ve re cu ta ne o us ant hrax and ex ten si ve ede ma di ed on the first ad mis si on day. Mor ta lity ra te was 2.6%. Conc lu si on: Alt ho ugh the in ci den ce of ant hrax is dec re a sing world-wi de, it is still en co un te red in Tur key. We suppose that pe ni cil lin is still the an ti bi o tic of cho i ce for the tre at ment of cu ta ne o us ant hrax in en de mic re gi ons.
