Трудно найти более яркую личность на боспорском троне, чем Асандр. Родившись простым гражданином, он не только смог оттеснить на время от престола законный дом Митридатидов, но и навязал свою волю всевластному Риму. Обстоятельства, приведшие его на историческую арену, не остались незамеченными. Об Асандре писали Аппиан, Дион Кассий, Страбон и псевдо-Лукиан. Однако собранные ими сведения оказались крайне фрагментарны. Дело в том, что античные историки, излагая заинтересовавшие их эпизоды из жизни Асандра, не считали нужным приурочить их к бытовавшим тогда эрам. Несколько информативнее памятники эпиграфики. Однако и они не содержатся искомые сведения. Объектом нашего исследования стали монеты архонта Асандра. Были выработаны предположения по методике атрибуции дифферентов, выбитых на аверсе его статеров и по дешифровки аббревиатур, оттиснутых на их реверсе. В результате удалось проследить этапы его борьбы за боспорский трон.
