トウモロコシ外皮から調製したDF素材 (RCB) をラットに投与し, 食物残渣の腸内通過時間に及ぼす影響, ならびにRCBを添加したビスケットを女子大生 (221人) に摂食させ, 排便状況をアンケート調査により調べた。1) 飼料中に, RCBをNDF含量5%レベルで添加して成熟ラットに投与し, 食物残渣の腸内通過時間を測定した。糞が出終わるまでの時間は, DF無添加群50.8±1.2時間に比して, RCB群32.5±1.2時間と有意に短縮された。また, 糞の水分含量もDF無添加群40.6±1.6%に比べて, RCB群46.0±0.3%と有意に高い値を示した。RCBは比較として用いたWBとほとんど同じ結果を示した。2) 女子大生 (1819歳) を被験者とし, 1日当たり5.5gのDFを強化したRCB添加ビスケットを2週間継続して摂食させ, 排便状況について調べた。その結果, 毎日排便のある人が37.6%から60.2%に増加した。被験者のうち, 便秘症とみなされる人は25.8%含まれていたが, 1週間のビスケットの摂取により, その59.6%の人に便秘改善効果が認められた。
