Young adult (7 weeks old) and multiparous (6 months old in average) rats were fed 1,500 ppm lead nitrate solution for 20 days as drinking water. Following the cessation of lead administration, rats were given either the standard diet (20% protein) or the high-protein diet (40% protein) containing twice as much milk casein as the standard diet for 13 weeks to compare the effects of the diets on the retention and excretion of lead. The results were as follows: 1) No significant difference was observed for both groups in the effects of the diets on urinary lead excretion 1, 6 and 13 weeks after cessation of lead administration. Fecal lead levels were higher in the multiparous rats given the standard diet after 6 weeks and in the young adult and multiparous rats on the high-protein diet after 13 weeks following the cessation of lead administration. 2) No difference was observed in the effects of the diet on the lead levels both in the liver and the kidney of both groups at any time. 3) The lead level in the spleen was lower in the young adult group on the high-protein diet after 13 weeks than in those on the standard diet. 4) Six and 13 weeks after cessation of lead administration, the young adults on the high-protein diet showed lower cerebral lead level than those given the standard diet. Biological half-life of the lead in the cerebrum was also shorter in the young adults on the high-protein diet than those on the standard diet. 5) The multiparous rats on the high-protein diet showed lower femoral lead level than those on the standard diet 13 weeks after cessation of the lead administration. Biological half-life of the femoral lead level was the shortest in the young adults on the high-protein diet, followed by the multiparous rats on the high-protein diet and the young adults on the standard diet. The multiparous rats on the standard diet had the longest biological half-life.
