A composite study was made of the morphology and phylogeny of Chinese Tuber species that produce ascomata with a cavity at the base (excavated ascomata). One new species, T. neoexcavatum, was found and is here described. It is characterized by brown ascomata with distinctly verrucose surface and prosenchymatous peridium. The presence of T. excavatum in China is still in doubt. A key is provided for all excavated species of Tuber.
