We examine the principles of personal information management in a social context and introduce OpnTag, an open source web application for note taking and book marking developed to experiment with these principles. We present the design motivation and technical structure of OpnTag, along with a discussion of how it supports our design philosophy. We also describe a few examples of how it is actually used, how this usage has improved our understanding of Social-Personal information management (SPIM) principles, and our plans for future enhancements.
