The boundaries may represent distinctions between geography, temporality, and identities, among others that reinforce, at the same time, traces of belonging and distinction. This study is based on different ways of understanding the border and it is based on distinctions arising from the occupation and colonization processes occurred on the banks of the River of Souls (Rio das Almas) in Goias in the 1940s to 1950. Our intention is to identify the theoretical and methodological bases that allow the understanding of symbolic conflicts in the process of frontier expansion, having the following localities as object anlysis: “Colonia (Ceres) and Barranca (Rialma)” . Both riverside communities, separated by River of Souls that arises during this period and establish symbolic struggle for the demarcation of its borders.
