This study assesses the elimination of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts and Giardia spp. cysts from confined calves that were naturally infected and observes how their excretion relates to diarrhea episodes. Faeces samples were collected daily from ten Holstein calves from week 1 to 60 days old and every week until they were 100 days old. Sample analysis allowed both visualization and quantification of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts and Giardia spp cysts. Research findings revealed that the removal of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts occurred from 6th to 12th day of life and lasted from 3 to 8 days. Most calves eliminated oocysts after 6 days, whereas Giardia spp. cysts presented intermittent excretion patterns after 17 days which continued until the last collection period.
