We say that a finite group G of automarphisms of a Riemannsurface X is non-maximal in genus y if (i) G acta as a group ofautamorphisnis of some compact Riemann surface Xg of genus g and (ii), for ali such surfaces Xg, | Aut Xg |>| G |. In this paper we investigate ihe case where G is a cylic group Cn of order n. If Cn acts on only finitely many surfaces of genus g, then we cornpletely solve the problem of flnding all such pairs (n, g).
