This article examines the ephemeral War Ministry which had been held by the Duke of Montemar between 1737 and 1741. This experience is situated in the political context of the Bourbon’s Army since the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, which was dominated by powerful lobbies of “felipistas” veterans, particularly present in the Royal Guards. Hence, the War Ministry has been an attempt to centralize from above the different branches of the army. Despite being theoretically subordinate to the State Secretary of War, Montemar acted in a way that caused the hostility of the privileged army corps. It is what is studied through the conflict for the control of the “Real Brigada de Carabineros” and the reform of the recruitment of the foreign regiments.Este artículo estudia el cargo efímero de ministro de guerra que fue ostentado por el duque de Montemar entre 1737 y 1741. Situándolo en el contexto que atravesó el ejército borbónico desde el final de la contienda sucesoria, y en particular en la difícil gestión de los potentes grupos de poder formados por los veteranos felipistas, particularmente presentes en los cuerpos de la Casa Real, el ministerio de guerra se presentó como una tentativa de centralizar desde arriba los diferentes ramos del ejército. A pesar de estar teóricamente subordinado al secretario del Despacho de Guerra, Montemar actuó de tal forma que provocó la hostilidad de los cuerpos privilegiados del ejército. Ello queda patente en el análisis tanto del conflicto suscitado por el control de la real brigada de carabineros como de la reforma del reclutamiento de los regimientos de naciones
