The article analyzes Indalecio Prieto’s political position with regard to the self-government aspirations of the Basque Country in the months inmediately before and after the proclamation of the Spanish Second Republic. The lack of response the socialist leader obtained from the mayority of the Basque nationalism in his proposal to create an antimonarchical bloc in the region, united to the situation originated in Catalonia on april 14th and the determination of the PNV to give the Basque Statute a Catholic confessional character, slowed down the process leading to autonomy and eventually turned the matter into an electoral central issue.Este artículo analiza la posición política de Indalecio Prieto respecto a las aspiraciones de autogobierno del País Vasco en los meses inmediatamente anteriores y posteriores a la proclamación de la Segunda República española. La nula respuesta que el dirigente socialista obtuvo por parte del sector mayoritario del nacionalismo vasco a su propuesta de constituir un bloque antimonárquico en la región, unida a la situación generada en Cataluña el 14 de abril y a la pretensión del PNV de dar al proyectado Estatuto vasco un carácter confesional católico, determinó que el proceso autonómico se ralentizara y a la postre se convirtiera en caballo de batalla electoral
